CircoSense are based in Glasgow and manufacture, supply, install and maintain the CircoSense3000 device, in addition to providing technical and admin support. The CircoSense3000 device offers savings of around 30-45% on energy costs for commercial secondary return systems through cognitive technology which learns the building’s hot water usage patterns.

The Micro Business Award is an additional award for the best entry to any category. It is open to businesses with less than 10 employees. The judges felt that this product was highly innovative and had great potential to contribute to achieving Scotland’s ambitious climate change targets in the next few years.

The Circosense product makes use of Smart technology to reduce the energy use in commercial and public buildings for their hot water systems. It does this by identifying the usage patterns in buildings and adjusting the supply of hot water accordingly based on a 14 day cycle. It replaces the use of timers to control hot water provision in commercial buildings. The judges felt that this product was highly innovative and had great potential to contribute to achieving Scotland’s ambitious climate change targets.

Savings of between 30% and 45% of the cost of hot water systems for the properties in which it has been installed were identified and an associated reduction of between 8 and 14 tonnes of carbon realised by reducing the energy use for heating hot water.

The device has undergone independent checks in relation to the effect on water quality to ensure it has no impact, providing reassurance about the risk of legionella.

The circular economy is incorporated into the product with upgraded models offered to existing customers as they are developed at a discount, and older models will be removed and parts reused that are still functional.

The company have put in place measures to limit their impact on the environment which include:

  • Hybrid company vehicles
  • Ceilings have been lowered with the exception of the workshop area (for safety reasons)
  • LED lighting installed
  • Electronic data systems are in place to minimise paper use
  • CircoSense unit installed to minimise the energy used in their hot water system.
