Around 80% of Scotland’s land mass is under agricultural production. With the Royal Highland Show day 2 today, there are some useful references that may be helpful to reduce farming impact on the environment and go beyond compliance.
- Scottish Government: you will find information on Farming, Forestry and Rural issues
- Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA): you will find agricultural regulation and guidance
- NetRegs: they provide FREE, plain English, up-to-date guidance on environmental legislation and best practice. For example, there is:
- A quick-start checklist for agricultural waste that can be printed off to check compliance
- Details of how to comply with sheep dip rules, including best practice guidance
- Advice on complying with carcass disposal and burial (including best practice guidance)
- Advice on complying with regulations regarding discharging to water on agricultural land
- In Addition, there are free tools including:
- A business self-assessment tool that allows a business to anonymously check their compliance with various regulations
- E-learning tools covering topics such as waste, water, WEEE, renewable energy etc.
- Video case studies which promote best practice for businesses.
- A mobile app, which caters for businesses or individuals who are often out of the office or away from a computer (such as agriculture, forestry and construction), allowing access to simple compliance checklists through modern, mobile, technologies.
- Zero Waste Scotland: you will find infomation on digestate and compost use in agriculture for farmers, growers and advisers.
Do not forget to share your best practices!
