VIBES 2022 Final panel judging meeting took place on the 8th of September 2022. The panel was formed of Fran van Dijk, Deputy Chair at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Jane Morrison-Ross, CEO of South of Scotland Enterprise, and Elise Cartmell, Chief Scientist at Scottish Water. Here is a bit more information about our judges.
Fran van Dijk, SEPA
Fran is CEO of One Stone Advisors Ltd, a global strategy and communications team which helps companies become more effective sustainability leaders. One Stone is a founding B Corp and a Best for the World honouree.
Fran advises on managing opportunity and risk to build long-term value, working with corporates to ensure that their business strategy, sustainability values and communications align. Fran’s forte is helping emerging sustainability leaders focus on the things that matter most, especially when it comes to sustainability opportunities and risks. At C-suite and senior level, she asks the right questions, guides priority-setting and helps turn ambition to reality. Clients include Aggreko, Carlsberg Group, Coutts, Danish Crown, Edrington, Electrolux, Ericsson, Tetra Pak, TUI Travel and SSE.
Fran holds Masters degrees from the University of Cambridge and the European Association for Environmental Management Education. She is co-author of Creating a Culture of Integrity: Business Ethics for the 21st Century. Fran is Deputy Chair of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, chairs the Macaulay Development Trust and served on the advisory committee of Montanaro Asset Management’s Better World Fund.
Jane Morrison-Ross, South of Scotland Enterprise
Jane is the CEO of South of Scotland Enterprise, the newest enterprise agency in Scotland established on 1st April 2020. SOSE is the first of Scotland’s public agencies whose legislation promotes a wider view on the economy and how it impacts all we do, with a focus on the wellbeing of communities, the economy, and the environment across the South.
Previously, Jane was the CEO of ScotlandIS, the industry body and cluster management organisation for the digital and technology industries in Scotland. She worked on Connecting Scotland (the SG-led digital inclusion programme), and the Digital Nation Challenge in partnership with the SG’s Digital Directorate.
Prior to this, Jane was CEO of Taigh Cearsabhagh in North Uist, and she is also a highly experienced consulting industry executive, a former strategy and transformation specialist with 25 years’ experience working across the public and private sector. She holds board and advisory positions with a number of organisations, is a Fellow of the RSA, Chair of a Scottish Charity in Dumfries, sits on the Civtech Strategic Advisory Board, the Connecting Scotland Board, the Energy Advisory Board, and Innovation Centre Advisory Board.
Professor Elise Cartmell, Scottish Water
Professor Elise Cartmell is the Chief Scientist at Scottish Water and is responsible for their Scientific and Business Excellence Services. Elise joined Scottish Water in April 2016 following a career in academia at Cranfield University where she was Professor of Water Technology and Director of Environmental Technology. Prior to joining Cranfield in 2000 she was a research scientist at WRc plc. Elise is a chemist with a BSc (Hons) from The University of Edinburgh and a PhD from Imperial College, London. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is on the UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) Board. Elise remains an active applied scientist and is recognised as an authority on wastewater treatment with special reference to trace contaminants (including pharmaceuticals), resource recovery and off-grid sanitation developments
